Buying a Double Buggy From Birth
There are many things to consider when selecting the ideal double buggy right from the moment of birth. We spoke with Fourth Trimester postnatal retreat expert Katie Billingsley for her advice on everything from seating options to age ranges to folding mechanisms and storage space.
This buggy is essential for active families. It will grow with your family from toddlers to twins. It's lightweight and movable, and can handle uneven terrain easily.
What type of buggy would you like?
Double buggys are great for transporting two children at a time, even if they are not of the same age. They can also be used as prams and come with a reclining mechanism in each seat so your children can lay down in various positions. A lot of them have plenty of storage space for everything from drinks and snacks to wipes and nappies. They're usually lightweight that folds easily and are compact enough to fit into your car's boot. If you're a frequent driver, it's worth checking that the buggy's maneuverability using the folded wheels, and also to get out and back into your car boot.
The most common type of double buggy is the side-by-side one, which you've likely seen on other moms' pushchairs or even rode in as a kid. They're ideal for older siblings or twins who want to keep up with you. They also come in a variety of seating configurations, including 'cinema seats'. They are generally easy to navigate, and if you opt for a model with a soft suspension, they will easily navigate kerbs.
Tandem buggies are a popular option since they're easier to turn than side-by-side. The second seat is located behind the first rather than on the top. double pram and pushchair are generally wider and bulkier than a side by side however, so make sure whether they can fit through doors or on public transport. They can be used to transport twins, a toddler and a baby or three children by the addition of an extra buggy board.
Lastly there are the'single-to-double' convertibles which can be used as a single pushchair from birth then convert to a double by attaching a second seat, carrycot or car seat to their clever frame. They tend to be more expensive than side by sides or tandem buggies but provide plenty of flexibility and a high return on investment. They're generally easy to steer, come with a huge storage basket and can cope well on uneven surfaces. Some come with a built-in ride-on board for older children and 'cinema seats'.
Do you have twins?
Double buggys are the best way to transport your children, regardless of whether they are twins or older siblings. There are two types of double buggy: side-by-side buggies in which your children sit side by side and tandem buggies in which one baby is above the other. Both can accommodate two fixed seats, but side-byside buggies tend to be narrower in width to allow for access through doors. Tandems are generally more spacious overall. They can also accommodate seats for toddlers and a carrycot.
Do you have a child?
Having a younger sibling can feel like quite a big responsibility at first, especially when you need to be attentive to the baby. They may also feel left out if they are placed in a baby carrier as you push the older sibling ahead, so having a double buggy from birth will make life simpler. It will also give your child the feeling of pride that comes with knowing that they are able to be "big brother or sister" and help them adjust to their new role.
The side-by-side double buggies could be a good option for twins, since both children will share the same view. However, they are bulky and heavy. Do you require a business travel system?
Double buggies are excellent for transporting your children around in comfort but they're not essential for every family. Based on your lifestyle and the age gap between your children you might be able to make do using a single stroller with some attachments, such as toddler harnesses and baby carriers that let you carry your child on their back or in front of you.
If you choose to purchase a double buggy there are three kinds to pick from: side-by-side, tandem and convertible.
